Responsibilities

The Safety Analyst position assists the Director, Flight Operations and Chief Pilot in the execution of the comprehensive Safety Program.  This includes reviewing, evaluating and processing safety reports, analyzing data, assessing risks and making recommendations on how to minimize the risks involved in flight, dispatch, and maintenance operations. The Safety Analyst also serves as an assistant to dispatch in the scheduling of regular flight activities.  In this role you will:

  • Report to the Chief Pilot. They may be required to provide safety data directly to the Director of Flight Operations
  • Utilize advanced safety database software to evaluate, analyze and process safety reports
  • Act as Gatekeeper to the department Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) program
  • Investigate issues raised in each safety report and FOQA report. Assign issues in safety software to each report that needs follow up, mitigations, implementation tracking, and any reports that contribute to trend monitoring
  • Catalogue safety data into Safety Performance Indicators (SPI) tracking
  • Determine root causes and proper mitigations to reduce risk
  • Work with the Chief Pilot and other department managers regarding changes to policy, training, procedures and/or practices to enhance safety. Review maintenance records, pilot and flight attendant reports, access flight scheduling software records, and make recommendations to the Director based on that research
  • Participate in or conduct research into irregular events occurring during flight operations
  • Research and analyze trend data in the Safety Program and other industry data
  • Track safety recommendations and corrective actions to ensure that follow-up actions have been taken that are effective.  Determine if the actions have been effective and if not, make recommendations for additional changes or corrective action  
  • Contribute to the production of Safety Alerts and Read Files
  • Act as an information conduit to bring safety of flight issues to the attention of the Director and to deliver safety information to employees
  • Supervise external safety audits and culture surveys
  • Book travel arrangements for flight crews headed to training activities, including airline, hotel, car, etc.
  • Assist the dispatch office as a backup with trip scheduling and record keeping
  • Additional duties may be assigned on an as needed basis, to enhance efficiency of operations

Qualifications

Education & Training Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of relevant experience.

 

Preferred Education & Training:

Bachelor of Science Degree in Aerospace or similar with an area of concentration in Aviation Safety.

Professional training and/or education in safety or investigation fundamentals.

 

Experience Requirements:

  • 1-2 years of professional experience working in corporate aviation
  • This position requires computer competency skills as all department functions are electronic in nature
  • Must be able to work independently and use independent discretion and judgment
  • Familiarity with safety analysis, trending and risk assessment
  • Ability to use sound judgment in analyzing reports, assessing risks and making recommendations
  • Must possess a high degree of personal and professional integrity with the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Detail oriented characteristics with an ability to prioritize multiple objectives in a dynamic environment with constantly shifting priorities
  • Strong verbal and written communication with the ability to write effective reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals
  • Technical computer expertise and proficient knowledge in commercial off-the-shelf applications, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Must be effective working both individually as well as in a team environment with the ability to interact in a tactful manner
  • Able to read and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations with a working knowledge of applicable Federal Aviation Regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with people at varying levels of authority
  • Must live within a reasonable, commutable driving distance from the Flight Operations in Sterling, Virginia
  • Must be willing to work at the General Dynamics' Corporate Headquarters' Flight Operations facility Monday through Friday and as needed weekends, evenings and holidays

Preferred Qualities:

  • Preference given to candidates with prior aircraft dispatch experience
  • Operational Experience within Aviation Safety, Flight Operations, or equivalent transportation industry
  • Professional experience and/or education in aviation safety
  • Demonstrated public speaking and presentation skills with the ability to effectively present on both the individual level and to large audiences, including employees, and industry professionals
  • While not required, preference will be given to individuals with a pilot’s license or A&P license, or any experience training for these certifications
